How Botox Works
Botulinum Toxin is a muscle relaxing injection used by millions around the world to improve the appearance of facial lines and wrinkles, décolletage, tighten the jawline/nefertiti lift and even reduce Hyperhydrosis (excessive sweating). Botox helps relax muscles that when contracted, create lines and wrinkles. Increasingly, Botox is being used by younger patients as a preventative wrinkle treatment.
Having studied the range of botulinum toxins available Dr Rakus and her associate practitioners have made the clinical decision that the toxin of choice at this clinic is Bocouture.
Botox injections are one of the most affordable, fastest working, safe and effective non-surgical aging treatments available.
- Several injections of Botox are administered into the muscles, reducing wrinkles. Treatment typically takes around 15 minutes.
- No anaesthetic is necessary and discomfort is brief and minimal.
- Your doctor will give you specific aftercare instructions.
- You must book a complimentary consultation for Botox with Dr Rita Rakus to determine if you are suitable for the treatment.
- We also recommend a post-treatment appointment to assess the results with a free top-up if necessary after 2 weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions
Having studied the range of botulinum toxins available Dr Rakus and her associate practitioners have made the clinical decision that the toxin of choice at this clinic is Bocouture.
It is the purest form of botulinum toxin available and numerous clinical tests indicate that it is at least as effective as any other brand of muscle inhibitor toxin currently on the market.
If you have a preferred alternative we will of course consider using this and are happy to discuss any aspect of the range of toxins we can provide.
- Botulinum Toxin is a natural purified protein.
- Botulinum Toxin relaxes wrinkle-causing muscles.
Botulinum Toxin injections create a smoothed, rejuvenated appearance. When injected into a muscle:
- It temporarily blocks the chemical signals that make the muscle contract.
- Only minute quantities are injected.
- Only the injected muscle will be affected.
- Botulinum Toxin has an excellent safety profile.
- Botulinum Toxin is used in a variety of therapeutic areas. It is one of the few treatments that can be given to treat children over 2 years of age to treat cerebral palsy.
Doses often exceed those around twenty times the average cosmetic dose. - It has been actively used for over 10 years in tens of thousands of patients worldwide. There are over 20 different licenses in over 70 countries worldwide.
- Botulinum Toxin has US FDA and European approval (including France and Switzerland). It has recently received a cosmetic licence here in the UK and for this use, doctors may prescribe another by name but which exactly the same as Botox but comes in a smaller vial.
A tiny amount of Botulinum Toxin - Bocouture - is injected into the hyperactive muscles, which blocks the nerve impulse from reaching these muscles. The muscle simply relaxes or ‘goes to sleep’. This relaxation enables the skin to relax and the lines smooth away.
Your doctor will ask you to frown or smile to assess your muscle movement and then determine the injection site to achieve the best results for you.
Botulinum Toxin is then administered by several tiny injections, which feels like a pin prick.
Normally no anaesthetic is required, but topical anaesthetic cream can be applied if you wish.
You can return to work or day to day activities immediately, but will be asked to follow post treatment guidelines.
Side effects are rare and normally resolve within a very short time and may include:
- Bruising at the site of injection
- Eyelid droop
- Headaches.
NB: Headache usually resolves within a few days. Interestingly, Botulinum Toxin Injections are a recognized treatment for headaches as it helps relax the muscles that are associated with headaches.
Rare side effects will be discussed with your practitioner.
Results will show from 2 -7 days in most patients, but some can take up to 14 days to see the full effect.
Results can then last from 3 to 4 months following initial treatment. Subsequent treatments can last much longer, but this does vary in individual patients.
